Ways to Cut Down on Clutter in Your Home

Does it feel like everywhere you turn in your home there is just stuff? It may seem like you don’t have a place to put it all and it is a hopeless battle in trying to keep it organized. If it is a struggle for you to keep your home uncluttered, then we have a guide for you that can help clear some space and create a sense of organization in your home.

Ways to Cut Down on Clutter in Your Home

Here are our best tips for cleaning up the clutter in your home or any home.

Make a Place for Everything

Does every item in your home have its assigned place? If there is just stuff floating from one room to the next, resting here and there and everywhere, then of course your home will be cluttered. It may be time to assign a post for each item to go. That will probably make you run into a storage problem, as you may not have a place to neatly store each item. So, we move on to the next tip.

Add Storage Bins to Your Rooms

The simplest way to make some extra space on the floor and counters is to store things into storage bins. This may not look super fashionable and trendy, but it works, at least for the short term. You can add storage bins to your bedrooms, placing items there that would otherwise be taking up space on the floor or nightstands, or even the bed. Storage bins are especially useful in rooms that are super crowded, like the pantry or the kids’ bedrooms. You can store food or toys in these and keep things neatly out of sight while making the rooms look tidier.

Create Racks behind Your Doors

One of the most useful storage ideas we have come across is to install storage racks in inconspicuous places in the home. Do you ever look behind your door? That’s a great place to add a storage rack, as you can install these on the door itself. So, your rack moves as the door moves. A rack on the back of a bedroom door can hold some clothes, toys, books, handbags, or other times that might be needed right before you head out the door. If you have a door on your pantry, you can add a rack there to store cookbooks, market bags, or other items you use in your shopping or cooking. Racks on the back of bathroom doors can hold towels, toiletries, or cleaning supplies.

Easy Ways to Cut Down on Clutter in Your Home

Make Use of Closet Space

Do you have closets in your home that aren’t being used to their full potential? Maybe you have a lot of upper space in the closet but no shelving or anything to store stuff on there. That is unused space that would be perfect for storing items out of the way. Try adding in a hanging rack for your closet or install some shelves there. You can then use the closet to hang clothes, store shoes, or place your kids’ games, puzzles, and other boxed items there.

Put in Shoe Racks

If you see shoes on the floor as soon as you walk into your home, that will make the place look untidy. Store shoes neatly in a shoe rack, which is a simple and cheap storage option that’s great for holding lots of shoes in a small space. As you buy more shoes, you can always make the shoe rack higher, creating vertical storage space instead of taking up more floor space. You can even add shoe racks to bedroom to store house shoes, sandals and other shoes that might not be used as often but that could be taking up valuable floor space and making the house look untidy.

Clean Regularly

Making a home look tidy and uncluttered is about more than just putting things away where they go and finding storage space. It also means that you clean your home well, and if you have it cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis, then your home will look much neater and well kept. Dust, dirt, and stans can add to the clutter of a home, so either you or a professional cleaning service like NYC Office Cleaning should be doing the cleaning frequently to make your home look its best.

Arrange Furniture Neatly

Did you know that the way your furniture is arranged can affect how neat and orderly the home looks? Furniture that is arranged haphazardly, at all sorts of angles, will create a cluttered look. If you line up the furniture carefully with the floor tiles or with the walls, that reduces clutter and makes for a tidier and more orderly home. It’s small changes like this that can make a difference, and you may not realize that they are adding or detracting from the clutter until someone points them out to you. You can do the same thing in your bedrooms, making sure that dressers and beds are arranged neatly in a line with the walls, creating perpendicular or parallel lines rather than kitty corners. This is also very pleasing to the eyes and the mind, reducing stress by forming pleasing patterns, shapes and lines.

Consider Getting Rid of Some Things

Consider Getting Rid of Some Things 2

There is quite a movement happening these days on the home décor industry. A lot of people are decluttering their homes by getting rid of stuff they don’t need, and it can be helpful for you as well to consider what is in your home and if you need all of it. Look carefully at each item that is taking up space and think about when the last time was that you used it. Consider if you might ever use it again or if it would be better to be rid of it so that it stops taking up space. If you go through this mental process with every item in the house, you may be surprised at how much room you can make.
